Promises can be exciting! They help us look toward the future. Others may bring fear or sadness rather than joy. Some promises, we find, are broken. As we grow up, we learn that the content of the promise, the character of the one making that promise, and their ability to keep the promise are all important. So too is the heart of the one promising, toward the one who is given that promise. Let’s consider together some of the promises of God, and how we may respond to those promises.

Can you imagine the pain caused when a son turns his back on a father and his family? Suppose he disappears for a length of time, wasting his portion of the family resources, and only returns when he realizes how far he has sunk. Then imagine, upon his return, the father throwing a party, a joyous celebration for his return! It is totally absurd, beyond anything the community would expect. Join us tonight as we contemplate the truth that Jesus so clearly pictured in this story, that our Father offers lavish grace to each of us when we come home to Him.
