Hello Audrey,

It’s wonderful having you on the mentoring team!

The mentor manual is what you have just gone through in e-learning. You are able to print each section if you like.

We do have training available online that shows you “The Mentor Center”, as well. This link is included in the form letter that is sent to each mentor after they have completed the training.

Blessings!

In Module 6, Topic 18 of 20, it lists ‘Spiritual breathing’ as one of the resources. I don’t recall ‘Spiritual breathing’ being mentioned in the fore going topics nor do the links or additional resources elaborate on what is meant by this. Can anyone help? Sounds quite interesting to me. Is like a kind of Christian meditation technique?

Kim K. says:

Hi Karin :)

I can understand your confusion… If you click to this link on the Power to Change website, you’ll be taken right to the first of a 4 part series on How to Walk in the Holy Spirit, and it explains Spiritual Breathing there. http://powertochange.com/experience/spiritual-growth/walkinspirit1/

No, Spiritual Breathing not meditation, but I guess you could call it metaphysical, as it’s done in fellowship with God :) It’s the conscious process of confessing to God, things we know we have said or done in our own will and power, rather than the Holy Spirit’s will and power. After that, we submit ourselves and our wills again to the Holy Spirit, and focus on following His lead, rather than taking the lead ourselves. “Spiritual Breathing” is simply the name Campus Crusade’s founder, Bill Bright, gave to this process, to help us remember it. “Exhaling” is the confession of sin to the Lord and thanking him for forgiveness that is ours in Christ, and “Inhaling” is the resubmission of ourselves to the Holy Spirit as the leader, asking and allowing Him to fill us fully and be empowered and directed by Him.

In Module 6, Topic 18, if you click on “links”, you’ll see a link to “Knowing Jesus Personally”. If you click on it, you’ll be taken to the internet and shown this 4 part study. Part 3 is called Power for Living, and explains Spiritual Breathing, as well. So, “Spiritual Breathing” in there, but unfortunately with the changes we’ve made online since these training modules were programmed, it’s buried a few layers deep and you’re right, not as easy to find. Changing these mentor training modules is on our “to do” list, and we appreciate your patience!

Have a God day :)

Andi BK says:

Hi,
I’ve been a mentor for more than 4 years I think; perhaps 5.
I’ve got to share that I’m becoming frustrated w/the lack of online resources I can find in chatting w/teenage girls.
Can you help me? Are there resources there and I just am not finding them?

One recurring issue is: ‘there’s this boy. I really love him but he doesn’t know I exist; I do everything I can to get his attention. He already has a girlfriend…..etc, and on and on it goes.

I use 2 resources; one that helps them to understand what they want from dating; one that asks them to ponder what God would want of their lives before they pay much attention to guys….
but so many of them keep coming back to ‘but I really love him, etc.

This is where my frustration grows…when the kid doesn’t get the answer they want so they just keep bombarding…..YET they keep writing to me????
Drives me crazy and yet I love them…..

Should I be reading any books on the subject of teens and development [from the Christian perspective of course]? got any suggestions or perhaps links I’ve not discovered [I'm not a techie so get lost in your system at times; stumble onto a good resource and then can't find it again or even being older forget it exists for awhile].

I hope Terri can encourage me or Carolann, to whom I am now assigned.
I am beginning to feel that perhaps my time as a Mentor may be over as the frustration in trying to answer is outweighing my sense of ministry for HIS honour and glory.

Perhaps it’s time for a critique or pep-talk???

Thanks for walking thru this w/me and helping me to find resolution.
I’ve not subscribed to the comments as I would like to hear from Terri or Carolann on this.

Be blessed this day
Andi BK

Terri says:

Hi Andi,

I understand your frustration. I read a lot of emails from teenage girls with this type of situation.

I’m going to give you a URL to the resource page where you will find a lot of helpful information regarding teens.

http://truthmedia.com/resources/mentoring-teens/

And also this URL goes directly to a dating article.

http://truthmedia.com/resources/dating/

The page about dating is excellent and has a list of recommended reading at the bottom as well.

We appreciate all that you do!

Terri

Chiu says:

I have tech problem: Online Mentoring Module for “Online Study Coaching”. Topic 8 and 9. After I typed my answers and submitted. “Real” coach responses were supposed to appear as a comparison to my answers. In both topics, that did not happen.

Kindly look into the 2 glitches. Thanks.

Carla says:

I’ve had this same problem.

Chiu says:

Pls Help me to reset my laptop.

I am taking Online Mentoring Training. At the end of each module, I am suppose to look through the “Links” to familiarize myself with the available resources. When I roll over a resource and click open a web address, my laptop software will stop it from opening, saying “BLOCKED URL…XYZ web address”. How do I reset my software to allow access? I have Kaspersky 2010 Internet security and Windows vista.
Thanks.

Terri says:

Hello Chiu and Carla,

We are aware that this part of the training is not working. Unfortunately the people who created this software are no longer with us, so we have no way of corrected them at this time. I hope that despite the few glitches, you have both enjoyed and gained from the training. I’m very excited that both of you are now ready to begin your ministry as an online mentor.

Hi Chiu,

I’m not familiar with Kapersky so I’m not positive how to reset it. What specific resources is it blocking your ability to access?

Rev. Israel Olawole Abisoye says:

Dear Bro. Terri,

If a mentor is faced with a question similar to the one asked towards the end of this module (My husband has lost his job and we are very poor. Can God help us?), do you think prayer and counseling alone is enough?

Kim K. says:

Hi Rev. Israel,

Once people complete the online learning modules and become online mentors, there are pages of online resources available for them to access, many of which are organizations and support groups that we can refer mentees to for face to face help. Prayer and encouragment from mentees is the first thing we can offer, and pointing them to resources in their area is the second. (We will correspond with them as long as they’d like the prayer and encouragement, though.) Thanks for your terrific question!

Why are the answers you want not in the order that are presented in the lesson? That is very confusing.

Kim says:

Hi William,

Thanks for your feedback. I’ll contact you by direct email for more details, because I’d like to know specific examples that you came across. We know that there are still some glitches with this program, but we’re not able to make changes to it in this programming form. I hope that despite the few glitches, you’ve gained something from the training and feel more prepared to mentor. I’m thrilled that you are now ready to begin your ministry as an online mentor!

Hi Kim,

I am a new student taking the online mentor course to learn how to be a prayer mentor. Although I am finding the course extremely enjoyable and informative, I am also finding the amount of information to take in quite overwhelming for a short time. I am wondering if there will be someone to help us with our emails and look them over when we actually begin mentoring after training, as I do have fears that I will leave things out or forget where to turn for links, etc. I am now on the evangelism lesson and feeling really intimidated about writing my response for the first time!

Thanks for your help and consideration,

Brenda Miller

Terri says:

Dear Brenda,

We can understand the intimating feelings in the beginning. Lots of new mentors go through the same feelings as you when they start but you’re going to be amazed how fast those feelings go away and you become very comfortable as a prayer mentor. Our team is available to help you with questions or concerns and your community leader, Beryl, will be watching out for you as well. You don’t have to worry Brenda or remember everything. You just need to trust the Lord for the words to say and pray.

We are looking forward to you joining us as a prayer mentor.
FYI: The e-learning modules are available to you for review at any time.

Thank you for this, Terri; it is encouraging to know that I am in a community of other mentors who are all here to support one another and encourage one another as we work to encourage others who seek to help, and I pray, come to a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ!

With appreciation and gratitude and two lessons to go!

Your sister in Jesus,

Brenda Miller

I just finished Lesson 7 on Study Coaching and I found it to be very frustrating. Many of the links in the study did not work, and I did was not sure at all how to answer the questions. Are there templates for these types of responses, as I was unable to find any. I guess I am still feeling more than a little overwhelmed knowing I am now finished the course, but not feeling ready to begin!

Thanks,

Brenda Miller

Kim Koteles says:

Hi Brenda,

Yes, I can see how broken links would pump up the anxiety level! I apologize for that… We know that many of these links aren’t accurate anymore. Unfortunately, this can’t be changed because of the software that was used, and we’re not able yet to revamp this program. The best news is that you won’t be alone as you begin mentoring. You’ll be put into a community of mentors and will have at least one Community Leader (CL) to email when you have questions or concerns. From within TMC, there are links to all of the resources and more, that were suggested in the E-Learning, and I can send you lots of attachments with these links, as well. I hope that despite the few glitches, you have both enjoyed and gained from the training. I’m very excited that you’ll be mentoring soon!

BAPearl says:

Thanks so much for this, Kim; it helps knowing I will be in a community and that there will be ready help available; I also know that my greatest Help is and will be the Lord, and I am very thankful for this opportunity to be serving here at Power To Change. Going through the course training was both exciting and challenging, and I will be using the next few days to review what I have learned, as well as to read much of what is available on this wonderful site! Thank you so much for your support. I am truly blessed to be a part of this team!
God bless you!

Bernice says:

Do we use our own names when mentoring…or a pseudonym? Could I use Sarah…to suit my age category? What address is wanted here? And I don’t
understand what you want for website.

Bernice says:

Sorry, I ran out of time.I don’t know how to finish this module. It has taken me 1/2 hour!

Kim Koteles says:

Hi Bernice,

Yes, mentors can use a pseudonym, if they like! It’s handy for us to know what it is, though, so that if a thread of conversation emails gets broken, we can return the pieces to the correct mentor’s inbox. I’m sorry that getting through one of the modules has taken longer than you’d hoped. Why don’t we have a phone chat and look at it together? Our toll-free phone number should be in my email messages that I sent you.

Tamara Ancahas says:

I am just beginning and I am not sure how to get back but as I was reading I saw some questions about specific information from a certain type of person. I answered in the beginning what type of people and what topics I am able to share. I was wondering if you will use that information or send me any type of questions from any type of person?

Thank you for your reply.

Kim Koteles says:

Hi Tamara,

Yes, we’ll look at all of your application information as part of our decision process in choosing which mentor community(ies) to put you in. After becoming a mentor, you’ll see that there is a separate place in your profile to note specific mentoring topics of interest, which are used when we have to manually reassign mentees to mentors. Automatic assignment of mentees by the computer program won’t limit you to these chosen mentor interests.

I hope that’s helpful….And I can’t wait to see you finish the training modules and begin mentoring and seeing how God will bring specific people to bless, through you!

Tamara says:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY KIM. I GUESS WHAT I AM ASKING YOU IS HOW DO I GET BACK TO MY TRAINING? I HAVE BEEN READY TO WORK NOW FOR A FEW DAYS BUT I DO NOT KMOW WHERE TO GO TO GET BACK TO WHERE I NEED TO GET FROM HERE.

THANKS YOU SO MUCH.
TAMARA

Tamara Ancahas says:

Dear fellow mentors,

I just finished the training and it was so well thought out and I can use so much in my every day life. Thanks to you Kim for getting me on the right track. I would like to know from anyyone what the next step is to take or how I receive people to talk with and share or help in anyway I can? If anyone would let me know I would so much appreciate it.

Blessings,

Tamara

Kim Koteles says:

Hi Tamara!

We’re so glad that you found the Mentor Training to be so useful :) That’s just like our God, making efficient use of everything we learn. Terri will contact you next week about how to get you started as a mentor. See you online soon!

Rick says:

I completed the Truthmedia mentor course and have some questions about it.

Where is the line between giving advice (the type which I would be legally accountable)and giving encouragement, suggesting action, giving referals, etc?

In some modules I enter a response to a hypothetical email and press Submit. I went to the next topic instead of seeing a suggested response. Is this a bug or my mistake?

What will I do if I am away from my computer for several days, maybe on vacation?

Each module has lots of links under the links tab. Can I quickly look up these links from the ARC?

Kim Koteles says:

Hi Rick,

Thanks for your questions raised by the Mentor Training. Yes, it can be a fine line between “giving advice” and “suggesting action” :) As you begin to mentor and respond to mentees, you’ll improve your feel of it, as you as the Holy Spirit to help you. In general terms, telling someone point blank what they should do is “giving advice”, which we don’t want to do. God Himself gives us the most important choice in life, so how can we do anything less for others?

Our best scenario is to write in such a way it’s clear that any choice of action always belongs to the mentee. We can share what worked for us, and had they thought about trying that themselves? (Don’t forget to ask them later what decision they made, and how it’s working for them) Questions work really well because they help people to think through their choices before they make them. Jesus asked far more questions than He gave answers. We can share out of our experience, out of our knowledge, out of our convictions, and out of what God promises for others, all from a foundation of compassion, but the choice of what to do will be theirs.

There are some glitches in the Mentor Training modules, and submitting responses without being able to assess them is one of them :( For now, it has to stay that way, but you’ve done everything correctly.

Once you begin mentoring, there’s lots of flexibility and ways to tell the system not to send you new emails if you’ll be away. Terri will aquaint you with all of these functions and reminders of how to use them are online, and on PDF documents. As well, there are ways to look up the mentoring resources from within The Mentor Center interface, and I have these on PDF files as well, and can email them to you.

Blessings as you begin mentoring!

Rick says:

I am an online mentor who just replied to an email in the Mentor Center, and I have questions. I don’t remember learning about communities like “Spiritual Growth” in the “community” field of my inbox, nor do I know how to select a community leader if I were to use the compose function. Did I miss this information?

KimK says:

Hi Rick,

There are too many good things to show and tell you then I can reply about here! Please email me @ kimk@powertochange.org . If we need to, we can also talk by phone.

blessings,

Kim

Marge says:

I am just starting to take the training, reading the comments is a lesson in itself. thanks. marge

Kim Koteles says:

And I see that you have 3 modules done already! Fantastic progress…keep it up :)

christine says:

I just did the Disciple module and I have learned a couple of things. One being that Jesus left His teachings with 12 men. What a thought, Christianity today goes back to these 12 men and the Lord and without them man would still be lost. We wouldn’t have had anyone to teach us tell us or share with us Jesus’ teachings.
The second the filling of the Spirit, how simple just ask and believe. Like everything else with our dear Lord.
I have learned some things from this module.

GLC,

Fabulous online training.
SO clear and thorough.
Also trains in not only the best answer, but also show “less good” or …

Again Glory to God, for your vision and this online training and ministry.

Thanks Dr. John! We’re excited that you’re joining us in online mentoring! Grace and truth to and through you in perfect balance :)

Dr John Dealey says:

Kim,

Wow!! Such a speedy response.

Glory be to God11

Thanks for the warm note bac and your blessing of His grace. May the same come to you also.

This training is marvelous, so clear, so concise, again Wow!!

QUESTION: I sent print options, but I prefer electronics. Several times I have wanted to copy and paste a small section. Can you tell me how to do this from my various apple computers, or if not, but hopefully there is an easier way, could I get a copy of the entire training electonically online somewhere, so I could copy small sections.

Again Glory to God, for your vision and this online training and ministry.

Joyous John
Be joyful always. Pray without ceasing, in all things give thanks. – I Thessalonians 5:17-18

KimK says:

Hi John,

Unfortunately, there are glitches here and there with the program, which include some of the print functions. I hope it’s a comfort to know that your login info. for this site will always be valid, so you can go back in and get a refresher at any time you like. It’ll be awhile until we’re able to revamp this. The most consistent way I can think of to make electronic copies of what you’re seeing in the material is to take screen shots.

Blessings,

Kim

Dave Kennedy says:

I am a male. I am training to be an on line mentor. I have not learned whether I will receive emails from male and or female. Please answer this question, before I continue.

Terri says:

Hi Dave, you will be matched with the same gender. If at anytime you are sent a female by mistake, you will be able to reassign it.

Dave Kennedy says:

Thank you
